Finally, a day that was both a day off work AND a warm enough day to work outside! I potted my deck flowers this weekend, and planted flowers in the front bed as well. I went with the tried-and-true this year, Petunias, Pansies, Coleus, Lemon Tyme and Geraniums, with some English Ivy thrown in. I really like Pansies and always buy too many because I like them all, especially the ones with faces. Baby Bingo Denim Pansies and Velour Blue Bronze Violas are my favorites. I thought you might also like to see the Bird Ghetto behind my house. The neighbours have at least 8 bird shanties nailed up in their tree. It seems to attract a distinctly lowbrow type of bird.

The Easter Crack-Off

The Competition has arrived - Craig and Lindsay's eggs
This is serious business!

We carried on the family tradition and had our annual Easter Egg Crack-Off. This works better as a competition with more people, but this year there was just the 5 of us so it was over pretty quickly! I was first out - the Jester and Lemon Fresh proved to be duds. Craig, Lindsay's boyfriend, had the egg with the most staying power and took the title easily. I'm not sure what I think of a newcomer taking over the title, but I guess if he marries my daughter all will be well. Maybe I should have told him that was part of the deal ahead of time??

Dying Easter eggs for the big Crack-Off on Sunday

It is a tradition in my family to dye Easter eggs each year and then have a cracking contest. We choose one of our eggs and hit one end of it against the egg of the person beside you. Then they hit an end against the egg beside them, and so on. At the end of the contest, the person with at least one end left is the winner! I have no idea why my family does this, but we all have for several generations. The loser eggs usually end up in an egg salad, and the winner gets to sit at the table for all to admire.

From the "Do You Know?" clip in my Calgary Sun: "The first egg eaten after the long fast in Bulgaria is cracked on the wall of the church. People then take turns cracking their eggs against each other. The person who ends up with the last unbroken egg is believed to have a year of good luck." Are you of Bulgarian ancestry? I don't know of any Bulgarian ancestors, but will have to check into that. Thanks for the info - it was very interesting! Thu 15-Apr-2004 05:26

Here are some pictures of the Art Cafe we had at the end of Learning/Creativity Week at the church. Darren and I put in many hours to prepare this, but it was certainly worth it. This was also my first time behind our digital camera, so unfortunately some of the longer shots were too dark and you can't see how many people were there on Friday. We had over 120 people there for the 2 nights, and had much fun!
